day with Karina
yea! Today, I got to see Karina. She was home for memorial day weekend. yea again! We went to the Playboy jazz festival in Pasadena. There were tons of arts and crafts vendors. Karina browsed the photos for something to mildly freak out her future roommate, Cynthia. I was not opposed to the idea of freaking out Cynthia. Hehe. We got a good deal on the pogs (trade money for old-school circles of Hawaiian cardboard, trade circles for food) and each got a cup of lemonade and a sweet potoato pie. At the festival there was also a bean pie man selling pies made from navy beans. I promised Karina that I would ask my dad why navy beans are not navy blue in color.
Things I observed today:
1. $6.25 is too much to pay for 1 funnel cake. 3 sweet potato pies is a better bargin.
2. Summer is coming. Today's temperature was close to 90 degrees. Hot!
Here's some of the results from KROQ's rock/party music count down.
1. Beastie Boys- Fight for your right
2. Sublime- Smoke Two Joints
3. Violent Femmes- Kiss Off
4. Bob Marley- Jammin
5. Blur- Song 2
...
14. Weezer- Buddy Holly
I am glad that the people recognize that these songs are quality party music. No sarcasm intended.

memorial day
Every radio station seems to think that they have to have special programming for holiday weekends. KROQ is having the countdown of top 300 party songs. Haven't we gone over this before? KROQ spells roq, not party. Who plays Jack Johnson while they dance the night away? Not me. The only real rock party song that I can think of is the Beastie Boys "Fight for your right (to party)." Xi says that it's a song about partying, not a party song. Whatever.
Star (KYSR) is having an 80's flashback. Lillian and Suzanne's friend Thuyet called it an oldies weekend which made Xi agitated. Hehe. He never likes to be reminded that the music popular during his birth year is now old.
My saving station is the new "indie" (ha!, still owned by clear channel or one of those) 103.1. So far, regular quality programming.
Enough about radio. Today I got to visit Lillian, Suzanne, and Xi for Lillian's birthday dinner. It was great to see them again. The area that we ended up in was all Japanese restaurants, markets, and stores. The ramen was good and the nearby shops were intriguing. One store, giant robot, was like a dream. They carry kubricks, ugly dolls, gloomy bears, miffy, and art by some of my favorite artists like gamma go, j. otto, and tim biskup (above pic). I wish I knew how to get back for further exploration.
I got a new flat-screen monitor and my precious little vaio is back in action.

can't resist
I found a bunch of adorable buddy icons yesterday while searching for potential birthday gifts/crafty projects for friends. For me to use the word adorable to describe anything tells you just how much I must like them.
hair cut
This is my test to see who reads my blog. I am getting my hair cut tomorrow morning. Please leave comments with suggestions. I want something a little different from the usual, but not too different.
Thanks.
Today, I went to Universal Citywalk for a job interview. By the end, they said to come back to be interviewed again. The wondiferous thing is that they are interviewing me not for a ride operator job, not for a food stand job, not for any citywalk sales job, but for a retail worker at SPARKY'S. My big disappointment came when my parents told me that Sparky's "pretty swell stuff" is turning into "candy and some pretty swell stuff." For those who don't know, Sparky's used to be filled with every pez dispenser/accessory imaginable along with wind-up toys, lunch pails, bobble heads, and other toys from the past. Sigh. It's the perfect job for a nick-at-nite obsessed kid who never quite grew up. Don't expect anything though. I would imagine that a position is fairly competitive.

one more note
I just wanted to add, that I am without my computer until my parents can conjure up a new monitor for me. Stupidly, I argued against bringing home that huge box + my monitor this summer as it just seemed silly. At least for now, my parents computer seems to be behaving.
With my mp3s locked up in my computer tower, it will be a while until I can rock out again.
(Taken from www.dieselsweeties.com, "I am a rocker. I rock out.")
Oh! Also, as all my friends are still in school/will be in summer school, expect my future news to be about entertainment and media. Even with my friends here, I cannot seem to avoid being hand-dipped into the sugary shell of pop culture whenever I am home. Magazines + newpaper + tv + radio = olsen twins + shallowness.
After reading that 1 issue of Spin over the 1200 mile trip, I feel like the world of music is tipping in favor of bands like the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Where was I while this was going on?
guess who's back, lyndsay's back
I am back home in, what Felix cleverly refers to as, da 'Bra. Yes, back in good old Alhambra.
After sitting in the car for 1200 miles with nothing but one issue of Spin, I have a lot of thoughts to share. Before I do that, I have to catch up with what happened before I left Whitman. To summarize, I will try to list the highlights as I am no longer motivated to write a long entry.
Saw the sun rise with Chau while studying for biology.
Requested a song during Tom's 24 hours of radio time.
Another morning stoner!
Took my last final.
For a short time, passed out on the MECCA couch.
Went to Safeway with Eric to find hummus and crackers.
Found bonus Japanese drink with fun marble.
Sudden storm (real lightening!): Got drenched with Huyen.
Passed out on Luis's futon.
Awakened by Chau.
Wondered what Eric and Elizabeth's secret plans without me were.
Soon found out. Birthday surprise: ice cream with candles, lingere wrapped in a well-designed HP ad, crocheted flowers, and a Chinese yo-yo.
Yea!
Tired friends attempted to have fun by watching iron chef.
Visited the party at Hotel California.
Became thankful to have friends that appreciate running through rain more than sweaty drunken parties.
Science-Tea-Indie Music Trio sleep-over on Luis's futon.
Slept through planned Greek breakfast.
Woke up reluctantly to meet future house with Anu.
Said good-bye to Eric.
Went thrifting with Chau.
Purchased 50 cent badmitton raquets and sweet onion pins.
Discovered that Chau owns a vintage Schwinn bike that I can use next year.
Returned to empty German house to eat with Internationl Students & Friends.
Ended up barbequing mint-marinaded beef and Prawin chicken.
Ummm.... consumed large wedge of watermelon.
Storm arrived again.
Walked to From Bubblegum to Sky concert with Elizabeth.
Enjoyed meeting musicians and watching background videos + nodding Kevin.
That's about the end of the fun stuff.
After that packing and moving began. I did eat at Bangkok 103 for the first time with my house. Anu complained that the chicken in her green curry was not yellow and traded some for my pad thai. Good trade. I also now have a copy of the ever-so talked about disco song.
Right now, I'm searching for summer work. I am super excited that, if I do nothing else, I am going to take a graphic communications class at PCC. With that, I also have access to their library which has a copy of Plastic: The making of a synthetic century. Now I don't have to order it just to be able to read it.
Also, on the note of being home, it has only been 1 day and my parents are already trying to kill me. My mom put mustard greens of death, so hot that they make people cough and cry, into our salad tonight. My goal for this summer to hold my vow to productivity. Let's hope that I can survive long enough to keep my goal.
More later about the trip home.

tony randall
Oh my. Three days after adding Felix Unger as one of my livejounal interests, I learn that Tony Randall just passed away.
5.21.2004
dooo doooo do do
I have a ton to talk about. Yesterday was very eventful. But, right now I am supposed to be packing. I have so much left to pack. Oh no. Chau and I spent the day moving our furniture into our new house. Tuan and Prawin, after unscrewing at least 4 objects, got our desk into the basement. For that, we are taking them to Golden Horse tonight.
Elizabeth's computer screen went crazy on her so I we have lost contact. I guess I should go old school and use the phone or even just walk to her room. Eric left yesterday in a rush. Soon he will be in Bend, OR taking care of domestic birds.
I paid back some of my sleep debt last night, but I still have a headache. Time to tackle the mess. Expect another post tonight.

even quicker
quick picture thread
yes, it's time for orgo.
My friend and future housemate Anu constantly plays the song "it's the time to disco" in my house. I have heard it so often that it has grown on me.
My orgo final is over. It's no longer time for it.
After the beer mile, I learned that, not only do I live on Linden Street, but the street has linden trees growing on it. This makes me exceedingly excited. I now know that I was meant to be right here, right now.
I watched Lost in Translation tonight. For some odd reason, it made me feel sad and homesick.
oh! I finally remembered what I wanted to say. Kenneth! I e-mailed him in reply to his heads up about the Mirah concert. He said that he hoped I would rock out on my organic chemistry final. This was all I needed in terms of confidence. Then tonight, I reread his comment on friendster. He had called me funkydory. Funkydory. Only Kenneth can get away with writing awesome little phrases and words such as those.
It's people like Kenneth that make me thankful to myself for associating with people outside of the nerd herd (not that I don't love them too) while in high school.
5.10.2004
like a treehouse
Yea! I'm just so excited that there is now a tin-can (plastic cup) phone line running between the windows of the Asian Studies House and the MECCA. Better yet, it actually works. Yea for Sam. You rock.
Now, I am going to restrain myself from updating until after my orgo final. No more computer.

showering dragons
The blue moon release party was on Friday. The Badger King was awesome. They came to our potluck. I was so nervous. I had the chance to talk to them but I didn't know what to say. I wanted to tell them that our cake was vegan. Thanks Amy for making it with me. Without that, I would have still in the blue slump wondering if the party would be alright.
Quite a few people came even though it was the Reid side lawn. They seemed to enjoy the Sham. Eric and I were bored and found the music to be undanceable. We played hide and seek instead while waiting for Elizabeth to come back from rounds. Yea for making a dull situation better.
These days
I've been wanting to post lately but I have so much going through my head that I can't choose. It's been a long time since I've thought and worried so much about my friends. Maybe even since high school. This is apparent to me in my recent need for music. I was beginning to scare myself as I have been ignoring music altogether. Now, I am scaring myself by wanting to listen to the Smashing Pumpkins or Trail of Dead.
I need need need to read biology and physics. Why are finals coming? Why right now?
Happy Mother's Day Mom!!
Ben Kweller + the Carolines tonight

no no no no more mosquitoes
Ok, I promise that this is the last one. I just sat out in a field of mosqitoes for an hour an a half. This shows how much I love the MECCA.
weekend continuation
I can't believe myself. I have just signed up for a livejournal account. Elizabeth's suggested this so that I can leave comments on journals without being anonymous all the time. Unfortunately I became obessessed with entering in my interests. I tried to list everything that I could think of that makes me unbelieveably happy which turns out to be a lot of things. I couldn't believe that someone else liked pickled walnuts but than no one else likes sophie ellis bextor. Did I spell her name wrong?
Back to the story of my weekend.
Saturday: Friday night, the vcc kids decided to do lots of fun stuff for Chau's birthday (spontaneity is always best) which I turned down for coffeehouse. They ended up playing hide and seek in the wheat fields, begging for food at Golden Lion, and then sleeping at a park in Milton-Freewater. They returned at 8:00.
Tuan, who was superexcited to be awake that early on a Saturday, woke me up at 9:30 to cook fish and savor the day. By the time I showered and dressed it was 10:30 but he still wanted to do something. We ended up sitting next at the edge of the creek just staring at the water. Then Tuan said that he wanted to paint the sidewalk so I offered him my chalk. He traced around me and the shadows of the trees. The day was just beautiful, perfect for the planned MECCA barbeque. Gradually more and more people came to the MECCA to help Belen with setting up and cooking. They played soccer in the street while I layed on the porch reading. Anu made tea, and I decided to clean up my room which has been a mess long enough to nearly change my perception of myself. It was so nice to have a vacuumed floor and a clean desk. Right now, my throat is still suffering from the dust that I inhaled. I think it's a small price to pay.
The barbeque turned out great and everyone seemed to have a good time. The food was great too. After that, I arranged to meet up with Elizabeth and Eric for the percussion ensemble performance. With 15 minutes to kill, I went to watch Tuan, Prawin, and Sebastian tree-climbing next to the ASH. They persuaded me to climb up and it was much easier than I thought it would be. Then I nearly died. I'm not kidding. I was trying to get down and somehow I slipped and grabbed on to a branch. My feet were just dangling. Tom Powers started to run to the tree and Sebastian and Stephen grabbed the loops on my jeans and pulled me into the middle of the tree. Prawin said that I would have only broken an ankle if I had actually fallen.
As soon as I came down, Elizabeth walked over to find me because I was apparently late. We got Eric then walked over. The percussion ensemble put on an amazing performance. I was impressed by the creativity and talent of everyone involved. I would say that it was nearly as good at the $100 blue man group show that I saw, minus the special effects.
Elizabeth said that she had told Oliver White that we would come to his 3:00 am performance for 24 hour theater sports. We had lots of time to kill. Finally we decided to go to in search of playground equipment. This led us to greenpark elementary. Yeah for monkeybars and flips. Yeah for spinning things. I'm not sure how little kids could handle spinning around like that. The fancy plastic equipment wasn't as boring as I expected. Really, simple metal bars and swings are all that kids need.
We walked through the neighborhoood for a while on the way back and stopped at another park to swing. Elizabeth was tired, Eric was hungry, and I had to go to the bathroom so we decided to return to Whitman. Elizabeth wanted to take a nap so Eric and I went back to the MECCA to try to find something to watch on tv and to plan for my radio show and to drink tea. We ended up watching adam and eve riding naked on hippos and finally iron chef. Elizabeth knocked on the door around 2:00 and we went to Maxey to see Oliver.
Oliver was playing a tiny keyboard. Most of the audience was drunk and didn't have any respect for his music. My friend Viet threw money at Oliver. I need to do something to pay him back for that. Oliver thanked us for coming which made the lack of sleep worth it.
That's my weekend summary. Sunday was good too but not as good as the rest of the weekend.
Back to thinking up things that make me happy to list in livejournal. Just kidding. It's really bio time, or physics time, or orgo time, or e. asian history time.
The Idaho Falls are playing in Silver Lake May 18. I was bummed that I will still be here until I looked up the club's calendar. It turns out they are playing with a guy called golden boy and ...... MATT SHARP. Now I am doublely bummed.
The song I like by Giant Sand turns out to not be giant sand but a guy on Merge Records named M. Ward.
I just happened upon this brazilian band called the mosquitos. Mosquitos. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
5.02.2004
mosquitoes, threat level up
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
My mom just told me that the mosquitos could very well be carrying the WEST NILE VIRUS. Now I am serious about needing help. Please come to my rescue. Death by small insect is fast approaching.
building castles in the sun
and singing fun fun fun.
This entire weekend has been spectacular. Even though finals are soon, it was a much needed break. I am so relieved that I can finally sleep.
Here's the complete weekend recap. Thursday night was the dreaded organic chem exam which I can't say went too well. After that, I got my traditional ice cream at the RCC and walked through the sprinklers to the TEK. They were all waiting for me to watch the movie so I felt a little guilty with my cup of double chocolate almond goodness. There, I saw Better Luck Tomorrow which was rather disappointing after all that I had heard about it. I didn't think it was that well made or captivating. What was up with those dance scenes? What public high school student dances like that and to that kind of music? That was not the movie's biggest flaw. I saw an overall lack of natural transition between scenes and the definitions inbetween frames was creative but unoriginal. I was too aware of the director's attempts to be artsy. After the movie, I went back to the MECCA to read some of my book and to help Huyen think of something to do for Chau's birthday.
As I have been doing, I fell asleep reading in the comfy chair and woke up to crawl into bed early in the morning.
Friday: Despite my goal to get up early, I slept in until 9:30 and didn't get much done before orgo. Dress-up for tea in class was turned down 2:1, sorry Elizabeth. Well, all day I was pulled between people trying to make plans for Chau. Arg. Don't try to plan anything with people that are more indecisive that yourself. Elizabeth and I had planned to surprise Eric for a late birthday present and storm his radio show.
I went to see Viet's presentation of chem research at 1:00. I thought it would only take 15 minutes, but he wasn't the only one to present. By the time I left, Eric's show was just ending. I called the show to meet up with them to walk to washington mutual. It feels good to deposit the same amount that I just spent.
After some confusion about where to meet each other, the three of us walked to the bank then to the blue mountain thrift store. There wasn't much to be found. I think Eric bought a skinny 80's tie. But I did meet a man who shares my life dream. He saw me looking through the 45 RPM records and told me that he had just gotten a vintage jukebox. Even though it holds only 80 records, he has collected over 300 in hopes of one day owning that jukebox. This gives me hope for my own future. As we were about to leave, I spotted these awesome little plastic onion pins that say walla walla. We each got one of those.
I went home to the MECCA and then was hauled off to an interest house barbeque. At least it was in the ampitheater and at least they had good potato salad and fresh grilled corn. Knee-high by the 4th of July? Where did they get corn in May? After the barbeque, I again tried to finalize plans with Huyen for Chau. Luis was supposed to be free to take us to the wheatfields to see the sunset, but he could not be found. Instead we heard that Tuan was playing at the Outhouse Unplugged (umm... fresh bread and good music). We stayed to see Tuan, Sebastian, and Jason played a song for Chau and some Neil Young. I realized that it was getting close to coffeehouse time so I left there, abandoning Chau and Huyen.
Home at the MECCA, I changed clothes to try to fit in with the people that I expected at coffeehouse. The show was Y.A.C.H.T., Thanksgiving, Oliver White (Lamplighter), and MIRAH!. Mirah was cool but by that time I was feeling a little sleepy and most of her songs were sort of similar. I loved that part when Y.A.C.H.T. performed and everyone was standing up and indie half dancing.
AhhhhH!HHH!HH!HH!H!H!HH!H!H!H!H ATTACK of the killer mosquitoes. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Someone save me. Mosquitoes (which I learned to spell in 1st grade) are one of my greatest fears and they are in my room. One bit me while I was eating my pre-blogging orange. Please rescue me.
The whole show was great and I am greatful for my rockin' friends Elizabeth and Eric for sharing it and the entire weekend with me. As Elizabeth would say, I less than three (<3) them. The bands passed around this plastic pelican (repeatedly mistaken for a stork) to drop money in for the band's gas money. Kevin E. seemed in shock at the coffeehouse turnout and that people were giving money. I bought an Oliver CD hand silkscreen and am listening to it right now. Eric Lindsey is laughing on a track. I am so jealous. What else? I'll add more details later as there are plenty. Kangroo and cookie pins.
After that, Elizabeth and I pretended to leave Eric to his job. That was a lie. We returned with ice cream. Mint chocolate cookie with 20 candles. Neither of us knew how to operate a lighter and I think I burned my fingernail. Yeah! I'm glad that Eric was happy. We hung out with him until close to 2. Then I read and fell asleep in the comfy chair again. See what I mean? Ok, I need to break for food but I will give the Saturday story later.
