Banana Leaf Thread
Here's a quick stream of photos before I venture back to the lab to filter those resin beads. A couple of weekends ago, we stole some banana leaves from the school and made tasty packets of Thai white fish and coconuty curry sauce. It was delicious. Chau's photos turned out great. Photo 1: Elizabeth preparing to cut off a leave. That's the library in the background.

Photo 4: Chau made me wait for her to prepare her camera before placing the next one in the steamer. There it goes!

Photo 6: Elizabeth is unwrapping. Ooh, look at those yummy food service almond brownies also stolen by Chau and Elizabeth.

Photo 7: Yea, smile because we successfully made some tasty food. That is all. Time to return to lab. Ra ra shish boom ba.

rant on the state of music
Here's me with my summer co-workers, Barbara and Caitlin. Barbara's photos always showed me eating and this is no exception. I am looking stupid, but this is an excellent photo of the two of them. According to a teen people quiz online: You're a rocker girl through and through. Your ultimate summer playlist should definitely include:
1. Best of You - Foo Fighters
2. Chariot - Gavin Degraw
3. Inside Your Heaven - Bo Bice
4. American Idiot - Green Day
5. Jeremy - Pearl Jam
6. Lonely No More - Rob Thomas
7. Vertigo - U2
8. Lady - Lenny Kravitz
9. Beverly Hills - Weezer
10. Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Yes, how much should I expect from a silly quiz that I found through AIM, created by the creators of Teen People, BUT Lynyrd Skynyrd?! Free Bird?! All of these artists must be on the same label that paid off People magazine. Also, I answered most of the questions with pop choices because I wanted to see what the best songs of the summer were this year. Still, I couldn't quite bear to say that my secret crush was Jesse McCartney (oh, his beautiful soul) no matter what and, of course, my taste falls under rock.
This summer I found that a bunch of musicians who I thought had happily disappeared from the music world forever had returned. Even worse, they were all coming out with covers of songs which were, as always, better before. This, in itself, is an indication that even after a four year hiatus, coming up with new and decent material is difficult. Most of them could be placed under the Cynthia music category: collective soul, goo goo dolls, vertical horizon, uncle kracker. I just can't believe that the rock revolution has not yet arrived. All I can do is cross my fingers more tightly and in the meantime, check out that latest, rockin' Rob Thomas single.

Look! It's Sunday again. That means that I'm up late writing another paper for expository writing. My plan was to write it early this time, but I opted for reading Shakespeare comedies, finally oranizing my room, and calling Karina instead. Although it's 2 a.m. and I am not done, I am taking a photo posting break. Right now, I don't feel tired and am loving this paper because a) it's a book review (reviews are my thing, you know) b) it's about David Boring (my favorite graphic novel of all time) c) I just drank 20 ounces of golden milk tea (minus the milk). This is by far my favorite photo from D.C. Rob looks good and Kato looks funny. This is Kato's daily "I'm thankful that I don't have a kid because look what I would have to do if I did" face. We had just seen a baby throw up on its mom, a girl throwing her sandals down the steps, and a grown woman wearing painfully high heels. All of this was enough to warrent the face of disgust. We were sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, trying to gain the strength to make the trek back to the hotel while being thankful that we are not stupid enough, with our already sore feet, to have worn high heels with our jeans.

haven't i said enough?
Okay. This is bugging me, so please help me out. The wonderous internet has given us the internet movie database. This has eliminated the annoying question of, where have I seen that actor/actress before? This did not eliminate the problem I have right now. Today, my professor was using a very waterlogged copy of Shakespeare's complete works. Is there a movie or a book where the female character liked to place books in the bathtub before reading them so that her pages would make that wonderful crinkling sound? Thanks in advance.
blogger break
Man,
I have so much to say.
I have been trying to focus on school work lately, but somehow I am eternally behind which makes me sad.
I decided last week that I would post the little things in life that make me happy from day to day. I have not done this, but I will try from now on. Lots of people made me happy last week. In general, my life is very happy. When I think about this, it makes me happy. I do not like thinking that I am one of the kids who makes Whitman one of the most happy colleges in the country, but I likely am.
I just returned from Shakespeare class. The girl sitting next to me borrowed my pencil. She did not return my pencil. She put it in her mouth. Last class, she rubbed her library book along her mouth. Eeee. If each pencil in my case did not have such distinct character in my mind, I would no longer desire it back.
Sunday night Lillian told me about the greatest thing. Check this out. UCLA spent $90,000 on a newly designed logo for their school. Being the wannabe graphic artist/designer that I am, I could not help but further explore this news. Again, check it out at . See those slightly slanted blue letters in the corner that say UCLA. Yes, this is the new logo. The site goes on to rightly acknowledge that the font is based upon the Bauhaus movement's style and then says that it can never be recreated as each letter is "individually altered to make a harmonious whole." Harmonious whole? I usually agree that simple, clean-cut fonts and style are the way to go, but for a so-called logo, I would desire a little more creativity than this shows. According to the wonderful Wikipedia, a logo should be distinctive in its color, typeface, and shape. This looks like I typed UCLA into my computer, capitalized and italicized.
The mouse (or mice) still resides in the house. We are now actively trying to kill it with poison. I'm not excited about finding a smelly mouse corpse somewhere soon.
Right now, along with being sad about being behind, I am bothered by all the stuff strewn around my room. Laundry, plastic bags, books, shoes, papers. Extreme disorganization, plus a lack of sitting space makes me want to avoid my room.
Also, I feel like I am in a constant battle with myself. My usual schedule now is (starting around 5 at night) run, eat, book arts lab, try to read, fall asleep while trying, go home, eat something, fall sleep in the kitchen or living room, wake up at 6 with sticky teeth, try desperately again to read again, shower, class. Although I am happy, my body and my bed are not quite so.
Today I received 3 ice cream bananas from my mom. Yum. I need to go to the store to buy lima beans and mustard.
Sometime, I should post something about my summer, the 300 site girls, and my trip to D.C in case anyone cares to know about these things. I don't feel that I have done them justice.
Today I was assigned this awesome book arts project. It is soo awesome. Ruth gave us too many examples and ideas and that is all I can currently think about. I don't know if I can compose a book idea and prep for it before Thursday. I am assigned to make a book without words. That's basically the only rule. Too much free space to fill in!
Yea for a return to blogger! I will try to post more often once my physical and mental spaces are back in order.

Okay. So I sort of crashed when I came home, but here's the photo as promised. Alex does this thing with his arms whenever a poppy song come on, like my mom's favorite crackerbox palace.

Being sleepy in the library makes me come up with inventive ways to avoid work. Here's one of them. Photo posting- the fastest way to blog! Here's a funny photo of David during a summer show. This is in honor of the return of another Breakfast with the Beatles semester. I'll post my favorite photo of Alex when I return to my room.
